Shellies FALL HALLOWEEN ART SHOW

What a blessing my daughter is...it is such a joy to see her pour her heart and soul into a painting and share her talent with others so that it may enhance our lives.

Shellie and her dearest art friends and teacher held their first big art show and was it ever fabulous. Actually it was quite haunting as shellie adorned her home in Halloween creatures and art of witches, pumpkins, mummies, spiders, abstracts and even some normal art was placed artistly around her "haunted mansion" of a place.

First let me tell you, it was tons of work and we mean tons...there were also refreshments just perfect for a fall outing plus they sold many originals, which usually causes a tear to be shed by them.

She has a new website I am hoping to announce soon. In the mean time please visit my website and under "fall window shopping" her pictures are for viewing.

IT'S HALLOWEEN, DONT BE SCARED!

You dont know how excited I am to be back on my blogger...I have learned a lesson the hard way, dont spill dr. pepper on your camera, or you will be out of business until you can afford a new one!

Halloween has been so fun this year, as you can see I hung beautiful witch hats from the awning and they would blow in the soft fall breezes. What I didnt get pictures of are my vintage skeletons, each uniquely dressed in vintage furs and dripping in old jewelry...check back next year! The fall boutique was fabulous, unfortunatly it may have been my retirement one?

A scarey favorite was the 5' black witch boot, many I adorned in old wrinkly tea dyed ratty lacy curtains, cheese cloth or satin pillowcases.

If you will go into our website under fall window shopping catagory I have posted many pictures of halloween in the shop and from the windows.

antique LOVEBIRDS Birthday present

Husband and I took a little "get away" for our birthdays, our favorite thing to do is visit antique shops and malls and eat lots of good food. I found this sweetest musical german antique caliope at Treasures in Springville, Utah. I glanced at the precious little cherubs and then the windmill caught my eye as our last name is Dutch, adoringly picked it up to admire and when I saw the 2 little silver love birds at the top I made claim to my husband...this is what I want for my birthday! He smiled (and thought " how easy" ) all I could find for him was an cute old box of staws...
Lets face it, to be married 34 years and be happy in love, what could be better!

MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR Visit if in Salt Lake City

Have you heard of the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir from Salt Lake City, and the Spoken Word program done every Sunday morning since I think 75 years ago? It is televised. Husband and I love to go there whenever possible and feel the peaceful spirit the choir brings to the audience as they perform so Grandly. My dream is to travel with them on their next tour...wouldnt that be a chance of a lifetime! I literally tear up the minute I walk into the tabernacle and see and hear them, the spirit is very strong in that sacred building. Last week I couldn't hold back the tears as they sang my favorite song "You'll Never Walk Alone", I dont know why that song makes me cry, especially when they sing it.

If you are coming to Salt Lake city, email me and I will tell you some fabulous places you must indulge in to eat. We had brunch at the famous Little America , I thought I had died and gone to heaven, then the next day I had to go buy bigger clothes! Yes, it was that good!

Daughters FIRST ART SHOW I'm a proud mom!

Here is the Poster outside of the Salt Lake City's Wells Fargo Building announcing my beautiful daughters very first art show. It was so special to walk into the Panache restaurant and see her art work displayed so perfectly in this upscale place where people appreciate good art. It will be on display downtown all month, if your intown I invite you to enjoy her work. I did have a big dissapointment, my camera battery died on me after only 3 pictures...of all times!

YOU CANT DO BUSINESS FROM AN EMPTY WAGON

This morning before venturing out to the yard sales, I was seriously thinking about ALL my MANY PILES I deal with every single day of my life!

Then off the wall at our first estate sale my dear on the ball hubbie found this old picture of a wooden horse drawn wagon and it stated: You Can't do business from an empty wagon! He was insistant on buying this (only 2 bucks), and it made me think of my MANY PILES again and gave me purpose to keep on going, of course!

I THOUGHT I was a decorator, antique collector, shop owner, internet business owner, designer, etc etc. HOWEVER I have realized I am really a 'PROFESSIONAL PILE MAKER." I am very good at it too...

Every day I make piles, sort through piles, collect piles, throw out piles, give away piles, wade through big piles, get irritated at many piles and irritate others with them, many times I LOVE MY PILES! Its a good thing as this seems to be my calling in life!

So this little antique sign gave me a new MOTTO, now I am off to pull the piles from the car and truck just freshly collected and sort through into PILES once again...now this one goes to the shop, this one goes to ebay, this one goes to a boutique, this one is trash...and MY LIFE IS VERY FILLED UP!

Think about your many piles...

EPAMINONDAS Grandma Johnson always told us this story!

During a little summer "antique" shopping trip a few weeks ago as I was leaving an antique mall my eyes glanced at this little red book called "EPAMINONDOS AND HIS AUNTIE. Well, my grandsons will testify that I let out a scream and I was jumping up and down (to the best of my ability) and I told my husband that nothing could stop me from buying this book! (was no small price tag either).

Growing up my girl cousins and I would stay at grandma Johnsons in the summertime she always told us this story and did the motions and made it sound so funny. Grandma had been a first grade teacher and it was one of her favorite books. The first born cousin received her copy.

Epaminondos is a little black boy who drags bread with a rope, puts butter on his head and of course it melts and he dips the dog in the water till it almost drowns...auntie keeps trying to teach him the right way to do things...However her favorite saying to him is " EPAMINONDOS YOU AINT GOT THE SENSE YOU WERE BORN WITH" oh how we would giggle when we heard that!

As my children were growing up sometimes when they or someone else did something really quite STUPID I would call them EPAMINONDOS.

See you never know what memories a little shopping trip to an antique store is going to stir you!

Vintage POLKA DOT DRESS & MORE!

I just GIGGLED when I found this black POLKA DOT DRESS in the closet at an estate sale over the week-end! I couldnt wait to give it a dip in Tea dye so it looked really vintage. In my last post here I mentioned my 4 days off, well this is more of what I found and gave make-overs.
How do you like the old wicker POTTING BENCH or DESK painted bubble gum pink ....so shabby! And the Grandmas ROCKER is adorably sweet, you could put it almost anywhere and enjoy it. It is going into MY SHOP TODAY along with the collectables pictured, a new find of vintage jewelry from the 50-s to 70's , vintage postcards (yumm-O) and whatever else fits in the truck.
One of my favorites...Ta Daaaa...this bird cage was the old ugly brown wood, it looks like a million bucks in Heirloom white...this is one piece I have not put in shop yet...there is no room as I speak.
BEST OF ALL...I was just ready to crawl into bed, seriously (and it was only 7:00 p.m.) and I ended up going on a buying trip the next few hours...check back you are going to just die over what I found, I AM NOT KIDDING!

My 'DAYS OFF" from shop

Oh my goodness...I love this time of year, it is "the gathering season" for sure. I had 4 days off from shop and this is what I did during the 3 of them... I gathered (searched and rescued) all these items, restored, painted and shabbied AND placed in shops.

My friend Maria opened up "Rustic Rose" in Ogden right before I opened up my shop. I rent a space there and this is what I took in...

Check out this PRIMITIVE green old KITCHEN CUPBOARD, the new fall FEATHER TREES , and the animal print vintage COAT (got some more vintage clothes I will show later on). I have been framing OLD ADS in vintage frames, SO fun, check out the coke ad on cupboard.

Also took in the Rustic Rose a girlie bubble gum pink and white VINTAGE CUPBOARD, shabby pink SHUDDERS to put in a room corner to hang girl things, a BIG heavy white shabby ANTIQUE MIRROR. and new shadow boxes for your collectables! I also have 5 sets of the SHUDDERS, in white, chocolate brown, light sage and shabby green.

RUSTIC ROSE is opened every day except sunday from 11:00 to 6:00 its much bigger than my shop and filled with some WONDERFUL nice antique pieces. Oh...and check out her antique PINK STOVE from the 60's, I told her not to sell it...its just too cute!

Ohhhh...MAIN STREET FARMINGTON in Winter

Oh my, I wanted to share with you this magnificent winter scene which literally took my breath away...this is Main street in Farmington this week. The antique trees hang over this street and you just cant help getting this cozy feeling. Tears came to my eyes as I turned off the freeway to my shop...to behold miles of snow covered old trees ALL the same and I wondered what kind of trees they were, who planted them all in this row and they must be over 100 years old...I have some investigating to do. I know, I will find a book on the history of Farmington.

FARMINGTON settled in 1847

This is the welcome to FARMINGTON sign on a stunning winter morning. This town was established in 1847 the year the Mormon Pioneers came into the Salt Lake Valley. I will share more on this historical town as I learn more from the people here. I have met some who live in some of the first homes ever built here.

Life is REALLY just a bed of roses?

Somedays owning a business isn't ALL that rosey...this is what I opened the door to this week. Seems the roof leaked right into my ceiling, imagine that since there is an apartment right above me? It's snowing again today and two more times this week...hope the problem gets resolved or I may decide to move or not pay my rent etc. Luckily it came out in a walkway and not on my computer area or expensive antiques! Yep, maybe life really is just a bed of roses...just not EVERY DAY!

HUMAN ART Understanding your own personal design

Shellie and I have been waiting quite some time for this magnificent book to be compiled and published and now here it is and much more wonderful than we could have ever imagined. It is full of unique information on understanding our own personal design. Every sentence is so beautifully written, useful and inspiring.
This book is written by Brook and Rod Thornley who is a daughter to Shellies art teacher Donna O Kearney. Her art teacher has done the illustrating and the pictures are breathtaking. Brook is an award winnning cosmotologist and master educator for Matrix, a division of L'Oreal. For over 25 years she has worked in the familys salon and day spa, helping the development of Human art Design. Together with her husband Rod LCSW who is a mental therapist they have co-founded Brook Design co. and Human Art.
What I love about the knowledge is when you meet someone you can start to identify which of the 4 catagories this person fits into the best and then you can understand better why they do and like certain things and it helps to understand how to help them with their home decor, their clothing, hair styles and so forth. It also helps with understanding your own children and why their personalities are so unique and the reason that each one does need to be treated in their own designed way in order for them to reach their highest potential.
This book will become one of your "best friends" and you will enjoy finding which design is yours...I know we have benefited in our life from this knowledge and continue to do so...so which design is yours?
This book will be available on our website.
