Living antiques for the garden

The antique rose emporium in Texas: http://www.weareroses.com/  and http://www.heirloomroses.com/ are places you can order vintage roses.

How did your flower gardens do over the winter? We lost many bushes and 1/2 of the roses.
My husband was afraid too tell me I am sure.

When an article in the newspaper came out last weekend that 299 of 300 rose plants in Ogdens botanical gardens died, then he braved up, realized it wasn't his fault and took me for a walk outside to show me the dead plants.
Did you know that we had a cold front move through in Nov. after it had been so warm, they figure it did alot of damage.

I had specifically picked my roses from The antique rose emporium because I wanted old fashioned styles. You can order a catalog and all bushes sell for 18.95 and ship from Texas.
There are only certain months they ship and they will come as a sturdy stick. But they do grow quickly.

I'm sure the local nurseries carry nice roses too.
Although we are winding down on the home re-do (getting carpet Tuesday, finally yeah!) I wasn't planning on a yard re-do. But it will be kind of nice to have a new look going on out there too...UNLESS...I just wait till next year and do it up right. How about you?

Hope you had a nice Mothers Day..

Closed today- monday

we will be closed today, monday.
Will see you Tuesday-saturday!

It's fun...365 swap party

Invitation to the semi-annual 365 odds and ends swap
truely it was odds and ends...RANDOM is my word...
THAT was the theme...JUST LOOK AND SEE:

Guests with their emails signed in on a monster huge chalkboard
standing like a fence in the backyard.
Note the tree with glued on blossoms of paper.

Whimsy Cupcake business treated us to the most unique delicious cupcakes
from their shabby aqua counter.
You'll find their blog and other participants blogs if you'll go to these blogs:
and
(I believe it was her home, the hostess)

I was just there at cultivateyou and started reading jen funks blog , grab a kleenex BOX
a heartfelt blog...will not give her story away... can't wait to go back when time allows me.
It makes me appreciate my husband/my business partner, my guy who fixes, redo's
carrys 1/2 my load most of the time WITHOUT complaining
He could and should complain, trust me on that one, it's been 38 years of selfless what can I help Brenda with next!
You'll find new creative blogging friends for sure!

Paper plate balls, garlands, banners of MANY types were EVERYWHERE
not kidding one bit
Quite entertaining
Quilts and old tableclothes draped over rope for backdrops
colorful

Here is studio 5 waiting for "365 swap" guests to arrive.
(approx. 50 guests)
This is as you entered the backyard...wooden boards painted brightly
with a wall of doors. Large Bench may as well say "welcome, come and be
cozy with old and new friends and swap your stuff for theirs!"

Vintage bicycle with basket of flowers and tricycle are
the door greeters!

Here is a close-up of the most divine cupcakes
all the food containers unique, whimsical, thrift store finds.
Made the food look and taste better!

This is new to me...appetizers in plastic cups with the dip right in the bottom,
just add your veggies...so picnic like and for once the weather was perfect!
Meant to be girls, you chose the right date.

Antique piano served as a candy counter
lots of odds and ends here, you could fill your bag as you left the swap.
We had the funnest eclectic name tags I have ever seen.

Antique linens were cheerful and seems nothing was
meant to match

Here is Becky Stratford making/ setting out the food.
Becky thank you for inviting Christa and I, we had an amazing time and you
were having a riot...not hard to figure that out!

Becky made her garland from odds and ends of cut books, hot pads, s&h green stamp pages,
large and small records, lots of non matching ribbons.
Each hostess created a unique garland for the outdoor decor.
The chairs you will note...non matching, not a one.

As you can tell...this is just some of the decor...have not shown all the tables that were
for placing your swap items or explained or shown the items and how it works nor the
GUESTS...well, I must have put my camera in my purse when all those swap goodies stared showing
up and I could clip my name on them with a clothespin.

What I will do is add links to some guests who certainly took other photos, their own version,
and tell you that next thursday on studio 5 this swap will be featured.
Hope you enjoyed and were inspired
you may want to do one with your friends!

spring week to be out shopping

Our shops "young artist" Sophie Henderson
dropped in with window decor and her sense of humor art work says Spring is here (kind of)!
Thanks special girl!

Maya handstrings each piece of jewelry made with love, they are unique masterpieces. She does many styles, my favorite is the vintage antique copper.
You may love the crystals.
Here are glitzy dangly clip-ons for your purse or anything else.

Birdcages in many styles await
the buyers for Mothers day gifts.

Roses pillows in wool by Kelly and other roses
pillows in fluffier styles make nice
keepsake gifts I even grabbed one for my home.

Joni and Sierra...are like gypsys the way they
compile their handmade collections.
They are busy creating Mothers Day cards and
gifts that would please any receiver who
can't get enough of their creativity.
sorry this one sold Saturday..."you know who Juli" could not contain herself!
Please
come by this month for gifts and home decor as there is always something new and creative here at Just a bed of Roses in Farmington!

Tomorrow will be showing new arrivals in furniture and our furniture sale continues.

Our home remodling is starting to come together...maybe after this week I can show a few pictures.
fingers crossed on this one!
I'd like to show Joni's...
would you beg her to let me!

She could sure do the Charleston dance...

She WAS ALWAYS the Center of attention...

My aunt Lynette just passed away, my mothers younger sister. As my sister prepared a talk we have reflected on our life with her with fond memories this past week.

Aunt Lynette was immaculate and her hair was never ever out of place, nor anyone elses around her as she always had her hands in someones hair! She would do her husbands hair each day until he suddenly died first just 8 mths ago.

Every Christmas growing up I remember her "tradition" of checking out what each person received from Grandmother...just incase YOU got something that SHE liked better. If you had something she wanted more...you had better be prepared to defend your Christmas present!

They had to adopt their children and her first child died at 1 1/2 yrs. of sudden pneumonia. A big trial to them. Then blessed with a son/daughter whom she totally fussed over almost to a fault.

She loved huge family reunions, was proud of her Icelander Heritage and usually at the programs sang with her husband, then by "popular demand" or just because she loved to be center of attention performed the Charleston (you know the dance of the roaring 20's!) She was cute, petite and her beautiful smile lit up her face and made everyone laugh and be happy.

Uncle Jerry worked at Clover Club forever, we looked forward to having potato chips of all kinds at each gathering. As cousins, Potato chips were our favorite part when she had us spend some summer days at her home.

We were a close family growing up, always going to grandmothers with the cousins on Sundays. At ANY of those gatherings Aunt Lynette would have her sisters stand up with HER in front of US, had them turn around and show their "behinds"...and then ask US "now who's is the smallest?"  She always WON!
Next it was the Upper "girls" body parts (boobs for those not quite getting it) contest. Neither she or her sisters could win this one... true ...so onto their daughters, us cousins, to see who's were the biggest. It just made everyone laugh and hide our chests!
Of course the men and boy cousins were in the room roaring with laughter!

We lost her once to Alzheimers and then again when her body filled with infections and she went to her heavenly home...to a bigger family reunion.

When Uncle Jerry died so suddenly I could not UNDERSTAND this. Understand is "my word" for this year. How could a man with an alzheimers wife/ a sickly adult daughter he cared for be called home first? My husband said "it's someone else's turn to step up to do the caring and to remember that this life is a test with lessons to help us grow."

Over the next 8 months there was a sister (my mother) and her younger brother/his sweet wife blessing her with their help. The daughter was given a chance to take care of her mother and failed because of some addictions and illness. Her son suprised us and took charge the best he could tho living out of state. 2 children whom she devoted her entire life to now had been given their turn to "give" to their mother and also to dismantle their earthly physical home.

Can I say Heartbreaking at times.

Aunt Lynette was the main caregiver to her mother as she too had alzheimers and our grandmother never had a hair out of place and was treated like a queen everyday until she passed on, and she also cared for her father in law in her home until he too passed.

She was an "angel" caregiver here on earth.
Everyone who knew her was blessed in some way.

The last few months she did have to enter a care center...and what a suprise to us to find she had finagled her way out the door and had climbed over a 6' fence...she was trying to find her mother so that she could help her.(so she said).  Thus getting expelled. The next care center...the same, she escaped. The next was a lock down center, she tried to escape the last 2 weeks of her life and broke her collar bone and then was bedridden until the end came too slowly.

During this time her oldest sister loses her husband. Aunt Lynette would have been first there giving her love and care if she could have.
At the very end her son took her to the home of her aging sisters daughter who is a nurse and they waited by her side until she passed on.

Lessons learned thru trials given to us all, and I UNDERSTAND more about God's plan for us. I know that she is in her heavenly home now with those she/we love and miss dearly.

You were the sweetest person aunt Lynette to all...your life was an example for good and you will be missed, sincerly missed.

I don't like to say "rest in peace" although it would be appropriate.
I would prefer to say "go live your new life in beautiful eternity with Jerry Lynn whom you yearned to raise here in this life and your lifelong sweetheart...so until we meet again, God be with you.
